Master's Applications
At Imperial College, we offer some great master's degrees for students with excellent grades in their undergraduate degrees. If you are successful in your application and receive an offer, then there may be an opportunity for you to work with me for your master's thesis. The two main types of master's we offer are the MSc degrees, and the MRes degree. See below for further information on these.
MSc Degree
In the MSc degree, you would take several taught modules over a six-month period, and then you would spend 6 months full-time on your individual research project, resulting in your thesis. This degree is ideal if you are interested in learning a wide range of advanced topics in computer science, as well as getting some experience in research. The modules include many related to robotics, machine learning, and computer vision, and include the Robot Learning module which I teach. Each year, I offer several different opportunities for the individual research projects, which students are then able to apply for in the Spring Term. However, I am not directly involved in applications to the overall MSc degree; for this, please see the guidance on this webpage. If you are successful with your application, please then feel free to contact me to discuss opportunities for your individual research project.
MRes Degree
In the MRes degree, you would have a small number of taught modules, but most of your time would be spent on a 12-month research project. This degree is ideal if you are strongly considering pursuing a PhD and you are hoping to get some PhD-level research experience, and perhaps publish a paper in order to strengthen your PhD application. In the MRes, you are also very welcome to attend any of the lectures that the MSc students attend, although you would not be examined on these. Each year, I offer one or two MRes projects, and the application process is explained on this webpage. If you are interested in applying for a project with me, please write to me at e.johns@imperial.ac.uk with "MResApp Abc Xyz" in the subject line, where "Abc Xyz" is your name.
