Internships
PhD Internships
Occasionally, I may be able to offer visiting positions to external PhD students, who wish to spend some part of their PhD working with me and my group. This can often be a great way to gain a new perspective on your research, form some important collaborations and friendships, and experience life in London. Candidates must already demonstrate significant experience in robot learning, and will typically only be considered if they have already published a first-authored paper in a top conference (e.g. ICRA, IROS, CoRL, RSS, ICCV, CVPR, ECCV, NeurIPS, ICML, ICLR). Funding for living expenses would need to be provided by the student or their home institution. To apply, please contact me at e.johns@imperial.ac.uk with your CV and a summary of your research interests. So that I know you have read this webpage, please use "PhD Intern Abc Xyz" for the email's subject line, where "Abc Xyz" is your name.
Masters / Undergraduate Theses.
I do not usually offer visiting positions to external Undergraduate or Masters students for their thesis. However, under exceptional circumstances this may sometimes be possible, such as if: (1) you have strong research experience in robotics (beyond just the content of your degree), which is highly relevant to the research in my lab, and (2) you have exceptional grades, and (3) you are considering applying for a PhD position with me. If you do not satisfy these three criteria, then I would not be able to offer you a position. Funding for living expenses would need to be provided by the student or their home institution. To apply, please contact me at e.johns@imperial.ac.uk with your CV, your degree transcripts, and a summary of your research experience and interests. So that I know you have read this webpage, please use "Thesis Intern Abc Xyz" for the email's subject line, where "Abc Xyz" is your name.
UROPs.
If you have outstanding grades during your undergraduate studies, then there may be opportunities for summer internships in my lab, such as with the UROP scheme. To apply, please contact me at e.johns@imperial.ac.uk with your CV, your degree transcripts, and a summary of your research experience and interests. So that I know you have read this webpage, please use "UROP Intern Abc Xyz" for the email's subject line, where "Abc Xyz" is your name.
Interim Students.
Occasionally, I am able to offer internship positions for outstanding students who are between studies. For example, a student who has finished their Master's degree, and is now applying for PhD positions and looking for internship experience to boost their CV (such as through a publication). In the past, internships like this have led to some great publications, such as this and this, and in both cases these publications helped the students to subsequently receive PhD offers. Whilst there may be opportunities here for top students, I am unable to fund such internships, and so funding for living expenses would need to be provided by the student. It is likely that you would also need to pay "bench fees" to the university during your internship. To apply, please contact me at e.johns@imperial.ac.uk with your CV, your degree transcripts, and a summary of your research experience and interests. So that I know you have read this webpage, please use "Interim Intern Abc Xyz" for the email's subject line, where "Abc Xyz" is your name.
Sorry, I am very busy ...
Please note that I receive a very large number of requests for the above internships in my lab. I will read them all, but I will not be able to provide detailed feedback for everyone. However, if I think that you are a suitable candidate, then I will be sure to respond to you for further discussions.
